Niagara Industrial Association Warns of Tariff Threats, Urges Strategic Action to Support Manufacturing Sector
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Niagara, ON, February 24, 2025 – The Niagara Industrial Association (NIA) is deeply concerned about the potential threat of tariffs and their negative impact on the supply chain for Niagara-based manufacturers. These barriers pose significant challenges to industrial businesses across our region, threatening the stability of our economy, the competitiveness of our industries, and the livelihoods of thousands of workers, ultimately presenting a broad-based destabilization of our local economy.
With over 650 businesses, 22,000 employees, and a nominal GDP of over $2B, Niagara’s manufacturing sector is a cornerstone of the regional economy, generating billions in economic activity and providing high-quality jobs for skilled workers. From advanced manufacturing to automotive, steel fabrication, food processing, and beyond, Niagara’s manufacturers contribute to the economic vitality of our communities. The continued, long-term success of this sector is essential to ensuring prosperity across the region.
The NIA exists to support Niagara’s manufacturing businesses, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to advocating on their behalf. As we navigate these challenging times, it is critical that manufacturing businesses reconsider their go-to-market strategies and explore new ways of mitigating risks associated with single-market dependency. Diversification, supply chain resilience, and innovative trade approaches must be at the forefront of strategic planning – and our community is here to help.
Now more than ever, collaboration and collective action are key. The NIA is committed to working alongside community partners, policymakers at all levels, and industry stakeholders to ensure that Niagara’s manufacturing sector remains vibrant and globally competitive. We will continue to advocate for fair trade policies, provide our members with quality information and resources, and offer the support needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving economic landscape.
We encourage all Niagara manufacturers to stay informed, explore new opportunities, ask for help, and work together to ensure that Niagara’s manufacturing legacy remains strong for generations to come. The Niagara Industrial Association will be there every step of the way, listening, supporting, and championing our resilient industry.
